Spiritual accompaniment and discernment played a key role both in pedagogy and in the history of the Salesian family. St Francis de Sales and Don Bosco were great spiritual directors of their time. Their expertise in this area is evident in their practice and thought. This publication is the result of four study seminars held between 2010 and 2014, which were a response to the request to deepen and relaunch the service of spiritual harmony as an essential component of Salesian Youth Ministry. The topics addressed provide a space for reflection on today’s challenges, with a historical, pedagogical and spiritual approach. Throughout the various reports, many questions have been debated which can help in the service of Salesian spiritual and vocational accompaniment, with particular attention to the accompaniment of young people. In these pages, we can find pastoral guidelines and operative proposals to develop new plans for spiritual accompaniment.

The Rectors are key figures in the renewal of the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco. They play a key role in the educative and pastoral ministry among young people. They are the key to the much-desired ongoing formation that must take place in our religious communities, and by extension also in our educative and pastoral communities. This Manual is therefore addressed primarily to them – and to all those who are involved in their formation, beginning from Provincials and their Councils. But this new Manual is also addressed to all Salesians and to all the members of each Salesian religious community. The Rector is defined in our Constitutions as a brother among brothers, and this is how the Church wants it to be, when not neglecting the duty of governance.

The theme of the 28th General Chapter of the Salesians of Don Bosco is “what kind of Salesians for the youth of today?” In the light of this theme, the Salesian Biblical Association reflects on the Word of God, which renews “our common dedication to the divine will’, (Const. 66) and in the daily life of the Salesian charism. Having the Gospel as the norm of Christian life and Don Bosco as father and founder, leads us to know Don Bosco from the Salesian tradition and to live “in a state of adoration”, attentive to the situations in which our young people live and suffer today. Here are the preconditions that guarantee re-reading, or better, a truly Salesian listening to the Word of God. This book contains a rich variety of articles that can assist us in meditating on the theme of the General Chapter and inspire us to subsequent course of action in our service of the young, walking on the path of true fidelity to the Lord in the footsteps of Don Bosco.

This book presents the results of an international survey conducted among the Salesians of Don Bosco in initial formation, with the aim of understanding what happens in the area of personal spiritual accompaniment. Responses came in from 4000 young Salesians and more than 500 spiritual guides and mentors from almost 60 nationalities and hundreds of formation communities around the world. The interviews were conducted by means of questionnaires in Italian, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Polish. The survey was undertaken at the behest of the Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Fr Ángel FernándezArtime, who wished, with his council, to take into account the experiences of young Salesians in initial formation, as well as postulants and those who had recently concluded the process of initial formation, besides also listening to those offering the service of spiritual accompaniment. It therefore not only leaves open but also provides the possibility for further study in an interpretive and prospective key.

This book describes the Salesian Society which is made of clerics and laymen who complement each other as brothers in living out the same vocation. The vocation is one, namely the Salesian Vocation, Salesian Consecrated Life. It is lived out in two ways, as clerics and as laymen. The author examines the charism of Don Bosco, which is essentially pastoral and educative and argues that both priests and brothers are needed to actualize this charism fully against the background of creation and covenant which are related to the Christ Event and invites each member to face courageously and creatively the challenge to promote both these forms in a world that is progressively becoming secularized.
